20. Juli 1964

The Future of Performance

Visiting a friend I perceived a folder of a German car producer on his table. The photograph of a zooming 4-weel-drive-car on dry gravel and sand looked futuristic and soon I fell into a day-dream, in which I watched myself on holydays at the banks of the Bodensee. 200 years from now I stood near the abandoned town of Meersburg overlooking the lake. The weather was nice and the sun beamed hot. As the air was clean some alpine peaks were just in front of my eyes. The only thing which was missing was the lake: Draughts sucked up most of the water and you could drive for miles in a SUV. No obstacles!

Returning into the present, the folder still lay there and wow! It had convinced me that some cars are built for the future.

Was fehlte war der See.

Welcome!

I am happy that you discovered my blog and hope to contribute to a discussion about performance art seen from the visual art point of view. Not all subjects are new and newest, as I am convinced that the past of Performance Art is still to complete. Also speaking and writing on performances means in most cases that you have to use past tense. An ephemeral work generally is over, when you begin to think about it, and exceptions like endurance-pieces as the “One-Year-Performances” by Tehching Hsieh for example are singular or rare.

In most of my contributions I shall use images, which were not published before. So please use them thoughtfully, which means using links instead of copying them, in case you like them.

I would like to thank Stefan Scholtz, who suggested trying this type of publishing and helped me handling operational difficulties.

Please enjoy scrolling, reading and commenting on this site
Best wishes
Johannes

For those who are interested in a verbal statement by myself about my approach to Performance art I would like to suggest the following site, which features an interview which Irene Pascual and Christopher Hewitt did March 8th 2011.
