Galeano: INDEXICAL, Grimmuseum, Foto: johnicon, VG-Bild-Kunst

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-301" class="size-full wp-image-301" alt="A.

TO ADMIT THE BANAL

Andrés Galeano: Indexical, Performance Nov. 9th, 2013 during the opening of his show UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHERS at Grimmuseum, Fichtestraße 2, Berlin
until December 14th, 2013

I. Galeano: INDEXING, Grimmuseum, Foto: johnicon, VG-Bild-Kunst

He piled print on print and among others you could see couples, families and groups on excursions, on holiday and while celebrating. No matter if parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends, lovers, colleagues, every picture showed someone pointing at things and people. The photographic images captured them looking at the camera or at objects, which they were indicating. Only rarely did anybody make the impression of being lost in thought, whereas many of the indexing persons seemed to point just anywhere, as they wanted nothing else than to attract the attention of the person taking a picture. This probably made the performer initially naming Christopher (Hewitt) at the video camera or pointing out the photographer.

II. Gestures of indexing

Linguistic discourses distinguish signifier and signified only. However Galeano’s performance demonstrates that the personas who were chosen to be photographed neither used speech nor did they act professionally but they made the area in front of the camera a space to perform in. Whoever had been photographed responded to the dispositive of photography, which requires gestures instead of words. This probably already happened in the 1950s, when Giacometti and a photographer were approaching or leaving Manhattan on the deck of a steamer. The artist made a gesture which extended the width of his body by pointing at something or nothing and the person who photographed clicked the camera. This made them become accomplices. The gesture of saints, prophets, emperors and generals was adopted by the artist being photographed. It could be that being special 70 years ago, but now – as Galeano showed – it had spread out as a mass phenomenon as taking pictures became a way of universal communication over the decades.

Galeano’s collection of amateur prints in combination with his performance leads not only to an expansion of the linguistic understanding of performances, but can be transferred to amateurish photography, as it shows that multiple gestural and mimetic acts are included in private photographic albums. Following the iconographic element Galeano choose duplication, which is also kind of a parody of the exclusiveness indexing once has had in art-history as a gesture of gods, saints, prophets, kings and missionaries, while it became a mass-phenomenon of the contemporary digital exhibitionism.

© Johannes Lothar Schröder

(for English version please scroll down) Andrés Galeano: Indexical, Performance am 9.11.2013 anlässlich seiner Ausstellung UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHERS im Grimmuseum, Fichtestraße 2, Berlin Bis zum 14.
